I hope everyone had a stellar weekend. Mine was filled with IMAX Dark Knight (super!) and Comicon (eh!).
The last time I went to Comicon was at least three years ago and my experience was quite different. On a saturday the place was busy, but empty enough that I could walk around and enjoy what I was seeing. I had a good chance to talk to a few people and actually catch up with those I met at conventions past.
Not so much this year.
We (Shannon and I) got there insanely early and even then it was pretty packed. I know it was sold out all weekend, but holy god there was barely enough room to walk once the day picked up. The problem for me was that I couldn’t really hang out and talk with anyone. Plus, con attendents just seemed to want to walk wherever they could, including right into you. After awhile, it just wasn’t fun anymore.
But I did get some cool swag:
-Octopus Pie #2
-Too Cool to be Forgotten
-Chris Sanders sketchbook (Which was “presigned” – that is the lamest thing I saw all day. He was drawing in the back with his ipod headphones on. Dude, if you don’t want to be there, then just leave!)
-Hickee #2 and #3 – signed by Scott C. (one of my all time favorite artists) who took the time to actually chat with Shannon and I about his upcoming shows and stuff. Totally nice guy!
-Atomic Robo #1-6 – signed by Brian Clevenger
-Buffy the Vampire Slayer (two comics I was missing. Yes I read the comics. They won an Eisner!)
-A cool sticker from Wondermark! (The Revolution will not be Telegraphed!)
-Two shirts from Questionable Content
-A new brushpen (so I can ink these comics for you!)
-A stylized mini poster of The Sinister case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by one of the guys of Goblinfish press.
We hit up the Hamlet 2 panel, which was frightfully awkward. Nobody wanted to really be there and the questions asked were pretty lame, though I admit I doubt I could have come up with something better. We also went to the screening of the Buffy episode “Once More With Feeling,” which has become an event akin to Rocky Horror. Though this was far less organized. It was filled with mostly fangirl cheering, booing for Dawn and holding up cellphones during the slow songs and waving them. We weren’t impressed.
So overall, would I go back? I dunno. Walking the con was exhausting, smelly and not really fulfilling, though it was cool to pick up some stuff by the actual artist. As with most things, it wasn’t as good as I remembered.
